The Libertarian Party of New York can be called many things. Patient, energetic, ambitious and growing are all apt descriptions. Attributes that equally can describe every 2020 Presidential candidate hopeful.
In Broome County, the hub of the Southern Tier of New York and part of the often watched NY-22 Congressional District, Libertarians are hard at work in creating a formal chapter of the Libertarian Party. After the success in becoming a State recognized political Party in 2018, no time has been wasted. By just the third formal meeting, of weekly meetings held on Saturdays at 6pm in the Dunkin Donuts in Johnson City, NY, across from the Oakdale Mall, several successes are apparent.
Public interest, and candidate hope for support, grows
Already there has been the notable recruitment of former Democrat Binghamton City Councilwoman Dani Cronce. Current District Attorney candidate Paul Battisti has been a recurring presence since winning a controversial and nail biting win in the Republican Primary. Current Senior Assistant District Attorney Mike Korchack has also attended meetings. Add this to over a dozen registered Libertarians and individuals switching from the traditional duopoly of political parties.
The growth and interest in the Southern Tier Libertarians, and the fact that the NY-22 is expected to again be one of the 3 most watched congressional races in the nation, are factors not lost on 2020 Presidential candidates. Which lead to one of the most popular perennial candidates since 2008 to make an appearance. That person is author and political activist Vermin Supreme.
While not the cup of tea for many voters, even among Libertarians, the fact that a national figure in politics found it important to speak with local voters should not be overlooked. Vermin Supreme made clear his 2020 intentions to the group,
“I’m generally recognized as a political satirist if you will… But in real life I believe I have something to bring as a candidate… The case I am presenting is that it is simply not inconceivable that I would be a very good candidate.”
When asked about the very serious issue of abortion, especially in regard to the current push by Democrats to expand the procedure to the moment of birth if not beyond, Vermin Supreme provided a very serious answer.
“I believe that people should have access to a medical procedure that is perfectly safe and legal.”
Libertarians and future elections
Not all the Libertarians and individuals at the meeting agreed with the 2020 candidate hopeful. Several noted the inconsistency of Government in denying options to the poor. Like pregnancy prevention surgery procedures while emphasizing abortion.
Whether Vermin Supreme becomes an official presidential candidate or not, it is clear that the Southern Tier has become a hub of political activity and interest. At the same time, Libertarians have quickly moved from a third party concept to a real potential threat to Democrats and Republicans. So much so that candidates in this years election are actively courting their members.
With 4 months to go in local elections, and New York petitions set for February 2020, interest and demand is sure to grow.
