If you smoke, you are bad. If you eat fatty food, you are bad. If you don’t exercise, drink whole milk, eat McDonald’s, use salt or suguar, or a growing list of other activities and consumables then you are… well you get the point.
It’s amazing how media and Government have worked to shape the conciousness of America. Especially when it comes to the things they want Americans to do, or what they don’t want Americans to think about. So think about this.
In recent years, there has been no end to the drive for “organic” foods. An oxymoron at best, since food is by definition organic. At worst its the greatest sales gimmick ever conceived, increasing the cost of any and every product with the simple application of a redundancy.
Of course there are differences in the items bearing an “organic” label. They are processed with fewer chemicals, grown with less preservatives. Still, an egg is an egg and a carrot a carrot. They are no more evil or dangerous because they may or may not bear a catchy label. Unless there has been a wave of deaths throughout the nation from people eating non-organic corn on the cob, or pizza, that has been viciously hidden from the public for the last 50 years or more.
But given the mania of the past decade or so, you would think that the Government, in concert with the above “organic” food fanatics, would shy away from something that is best known as “pink slime”. The true name is ammonia-treated ground beef filler, which does nothing to reduce the repulsive feeling the name of the food-product creates.
Ammonia-treated ground beef filler is claimed to be safe by the USDA. It has been used in meat and burgers for years. It is
“…fatty bits of meat left over from other cuts. The bits are heated to about 100 F and spun to remove most of the fat. The lean mix then is compressed into blocks for use in ground meat…[and] is exposed to “a puff of ammonium hydroxide gas…”
In fact, when First Lady Michelle Obama was racing around the country in 2010 to get the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 (commonly called the child nutrition bill) passed, she skipped over the fact that “pink slime”, or ammonia-treated ground beef filler, was potentially in the diets of children. There was no provision in the law to ban schools from providing this food sustitute. As the First Lady, she surely had a staff that researched children’s diets and access to the best data and studies in the nation – yet this was not a concern.
This is where the annoyance, and concern, comes in. On the one hand there are hordes of groups and people that are insisting that Americans lose the choice of what to eat, drink, and do with their bodies. At the same time these same people seemingly are fine with other items that theoretically should be just as offensive and troubling to them.
If the First lady is concerned about child obesity, and believes that the nutritional diets of children are not being met, why would she not seek to safeguard them against a beef filler? By definition a product that, while ingestible, provides little if any comparable nutrients as compared to an “organic” or at least more organic food. Where is the list of Hollywood actors that are more than ready to suggest that we need only use 1 sheet of tissue paper to save the environment, or that we must use electric cars (while they fly across the globe spreading their message in private jets)? Where is the outrage from Mayor Bloomberg who wanted to impose a ban on salt in New York City, or is beef filler not important in the diets of NYC kids?
It would be nice to see some consistency. Ammonia-treated ground beef filler or “pink slime” does not convey a sense of healthy in any manner. Wouldn’t it be nice to hear the same people so concerned about the Earth, environment, and your health say the same thing?
