President Obama wrote a book…

Everyone can cheer because President Obama has written another book. A children’s book. Celebrating 13 figures in American history.

Forget that 13 is an unlucky number. Forget the choice of individuals includes at least one questionable choice. Ignore what images the artist responsible for the artwork is known for.

The biggest thing everyone should be talking about is that President Obama wrote a book. Not former President. Our current President.

At what point in trying to fix the economy (as he stated no less than a dozen times on television), in passing the Health Care Reform that the majority of Americans rejected (48 times on television to promote that), in trying to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons (with nice words – that’s been real effective), in commanding the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, did President Obama have time to write a book?

Well to be fair, he didn’t write the book as President. He wrote the book in 2007, presumably before he decided to run for the Presidency and while he was an Senator.

Still it seems a bit unseemly. It’s just not Presidential. Pushing a book, using the mantle of the President as a selling point. A kids book may seem innocent enough, but what’s the difference from say an ab-flex machine or a juicer?

Either way, it’s the President being a salesman and not leader of the nation. Will he show up on The View, Oprah, and the morning shows to push the book?

Add to that diminishing of the Office the fact that it implies (in the timing of release) a lacadaisical approach to running the nation. When you read the beginning of this commentary, weren’t you a bit upset thinking that instead of dealing with the nation President Obama was writing a book. That’s the impression that is being sent out around the world, because just like you, most have no idea when the book was actually written.

Perhaps we are over critical. We can accept that. But it does not change the view that President Obama may as well sell used cars. The impact on the Office of the President is the same. This demeans the office.

Thus we have to ask, why has the book been released now? President Obama is already a multi-millionaire (from his previous books, mostly from sales after he elected to run for Office). As a former President he would have ample press and status to release and profitably sell any number of books.

What exactly is President Obama trying to distract from? We don’t know for sure. But it’s a question we really think everyone should ask. Not that president Obama will ever be asked.
