The following are updates for those seeking to provide donations (cash, clothing, cleaning supplies, ect.) and wishijng to volunteer for clean-up and other help.
On Facebook there is Flood Relief Volunteers which lists many ways and organizations seeking to help flood victims.
No longer needing donations
Village of Wellsburg has stated they no longer need cleaning supplies or clothing donations. They suggest further donations go to the Red Cross to be distributed to other areas in need.
Tioga County sites for meals, water, and supplies:
Those in need of emergency shelter in Tioga County can call Tioga County Emergency Operations Center at 687-8470 x185. Shelters currently open are:
Baptist Church, Candor, Methodist Church in Apalachin
Johnson City – First Baptist Church of Johnson City, 1321 Reynolds Road, is providing water and clothing and is a Red Cross distribution center. Supplies that are needed include: bleach, paper plates and cups, new children’s socks and underwear (in the package), new bath towels, new blankets, new pillow, paper towels, new work, garbage bags, personal care items (denture supplies, shampoo, deodorant, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste), dog and cat food. Vestal Teachers’ Association and Association of Vestal School Paraprofessionals have a flood relief distribution center at the United Methodist Church, 328 Main St., Vestal. The center is open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily. They are looking for:diapers, formula, bleach, buckets, mops, new socks and underwear (all sizes), rubber gloves, sponges, toiletries, including shampoo, soap, deodorant, towels and wash cloths.
Food, cleaning supplies, clothing – donations and distribution
Sayre is looking for cleaning supplies (buckets, rakes, rags, ect.). Please dropp of supplies at Curves on 101 S. Keystone Avenue. Further, those seeking to volunteer to clean homes are asked to meet on Saturday, at the Curves in Sayre, at 9am.
Conklin – Conklin Presbyterian Church, 1175 Conklin Road, is providing food to flood victims and volunteers. Donations of supplies (sump pumps, generators, heavy-duty contractor garbage bags, work lights, flashlights, work gloves, flat edge shovels, ect) and food is also being taken at the Church. Voulunteer efforts are being coordinated there as well. Furniture and clothing donations are no longer in need. Contact Greg Jenkins at firstname.lastname@example.org for more details.
Town of Dickinson – Broome Community College’s Student Activities is collecting supplies in the SA Café, Science 106 on campus. They are looking for:clothing (new), socks and underwear (in packaging), shoes, baby items, clean used clothes and outwear, diapers and wipe, blankets and pillows (new), toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, hand sanitizers, clean-up items, latex gloves, masks, heavy-duty black plastic bags and bottled water
GHS Federal Credit Union is collecting supplies to be donated to flood victims from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at its main office on Front Street and its downtown office at 105 Court St. in Binghamton.
Endwell – Our Saviour Lutheran Church at 731 Hooper Road, will give out adults and children clothing from 12noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Town of Union has suspended Section 8 applications temporarily – giving priority to those affected by the flooding. Proof of residency in an affected area and a completed application is required by Sept 30th. Contact is Section 8 program at (607) 786-2985.
As stated previously, United Way of Broome County is accepting monetary donations. Checks can be sent to United Way of Broome County, P.O. Box 550, Binghamton, N.Y. 13902-0550. Make checks payable to United Way of Broome County, “Flood relief – Sept. 2011” should be stated on the memo line of the check. Online donations can be done by clicking the “GIVE NOW” button on United Way’s website, www.unitedwaybroome.org.
As stated prior, on Wednesday, WSKG Broadcasting, WBNG, WICZ and WIVT will host the Local Broadcasters Flood Relief 2011, a telethon, from 7 to 10 p.m. with programming simulcast on WSKG and WSQX Radio.WSKG Radio will be fund-raising from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. with a two-hour call-in show from 2 to 4 p.m.
The Salvation Army needs volunteers to distribute cleanup kits and to help families clean out their houses in Broome and Tioga counties. To volunteer, call the Binghamton Salvation Army at (607)722-3059 or go to the Salvation Army at 127 Washington St., Binghamton.
