Universal Voter Registration – a simple idea that’s simply bad
In any election year the political parties gear up and try everything they can to gain an advantage. Redistricting, smear campaigns, and use of community groups (ACORN is the most notable but not exclusive) are just some of the tactics both sides use. But there is one tactic I have just become aware of that strikes me odd.
Universal Voter Registration.
The concept is simple enough. Everyone who exists on ANY government database is therefore registered to vote. Uncommonly straight to the point compared to almost any Bill or Law from the last decade or 3.
You would think that this would be advocated by everyone. You would imagine, since the nation is historically center-right, that Republicans would be the proponents of this idea. But in fact it is a Democrat concept. Why?
The problem with this concept is as simple as it’s purpose. There are hundreds of government databases in existence. There are dozens of duplications – ie. a homeowner, who was in the military, that drives a car, and works as a stockbroker would be found in the FBI, DMV, IRS, SEC, and potentially multiple other databases. Several of these databases are not, and cannot be shared or linked. Thus, there would have to be duplication on an intra-and interstate level (like if there were 2 homes owned in different states, or cars, ect.). So it would be simple for someone that wanted to commit voter fraud to vote more than once, or for anyone with computer knowledge to abuse the system by finding the duplications and committing voter fraud.
The application of the idea is rife with holes and complications that might never be resolved. It would cost billions to even try to fix half the issues, and likely require another Government agency to be created to run and seek out fraud. Which only deals with the legitimate citizenry.
There are numerous States and cities (California) that have illegal aliens on the books. These illegals could and are often on multiple databases. In some cases they aren’t even identified as illegal aliens. Trying to weed out these names would be another layer of complications and cost that make this idea prohibative.
So why is it speculated that Senator Schumer (D – NY) and Rep. Barney Frank (D – Mas.) will introduce this idea?
Because of the potential gain that Democrats could receive. It would be the first step towards a path to citizenship for illegal aliens in the nation. It would allow any group that was prepared for this ideas passage to rally a horde of votes to any political party of individual and sway true results.
Imagine that ACORN, an institution known in a dozen States for voter fraud (solely benefiting Democrats) in some cases involving the dead and even Mickey Mouse, abused the system of duplicates and illegal aliens. How many votes could they potentially steer towards issues that fit their political agenda? Issues that a center-right leaning nation does not agree with? Issues that otherwise would not pass, or individuals would not be elected?
Universal Voter Registration is like Health Care Reform. It is an idea that any reasonably minded person can agree with. The devil is in the details though, and the details are so vast and congested with political partisanship that the original goal is lost long before any real details are mapped out.
Supposedly Universal Voter Registration is set to be introduced this month. Timed well with 2010 being an election year, and Democrats faced with the problems of a Health Care Reform Bill that is being rammed through Congress that no one understands and fewer have read in full. If this is passed quickly, before the public can become aware of it and taking advantage of the Democrat numbers in Congress, it could provide the leverage to offset elected officials disregard for the public’s majority dislike of the Health Care Reform, the vivid failure of the Obama Stimulus, the dismal economy, and the lack of focus on the domestic security.
If you never heard about Universal Voter Registration before, check it out. Ask your elected representative about it. Ask for the transparency that President Obama campaigned on and promised the nation. Don’t let this slip through and then bite the nation on election day.
